Spark Plug Replacement for High Mileage Cars Near Mesquite

Spark plugs are one of those parts that get forgotten until something goes wrong. On a high mileage car, that is exactly when you can least afford it. Most cars built in the last 20 years come factory with long life spark plugs. Platinum and iridium designs can go 60,000 miles or more before they need attention. That sounds great until you realize the mileage on your car is creeping past the point where those plugs are due. When they finally fail, the symptoms show up as rough running, sluggish acceleration, or a check engine light for a misfire code.

Platinum and iridium plugs have a finer electrode tip than old style copper plugs. They last longer, but they are also more sensitive to wear patterns that develop over time. The gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode widens as the plug wears. A worn plug still fires, but the spark is weaker and combustion inside the cylinder suffers. On high mileage vehicles, deposits from oil consumption or low quality fuel can coat the ceramic insulator, creating a path for the spark to leak sideways instead of jumping the gap cleanly. The result is a misfire that comes and goes, which is harder to diagnose than a plug that fails completely.

When plugs misfire, unburned fuel gets pushed into the exhaust. That extra fuel can damage an oxygen sensor or cause your catalytic converter to run hot, and those repairs cost more than the spark plugs did. When you bring your car to our Mesquite shop, we start by reading the codes if your check engine light is on. That tells us which cylinders are misfiring and helps us decide if the problem is likely the spark plugs or something else.

We remove the old plugs and inspect them, because a worn plug tells a story. We look at the gap, the electrode condition, and any deposits on the ceramic. That inspection tells us whether we are dealing with normal wear, oil fouling, or fuel related deposits, and addressing the cause matters as much as replacing the plugs. We install the correct plug for your vehicle. If your car calls for iridium, we use iridium. If it needs platinum, we use platinum. We never substitute a cheaper plug that does not meet the manufacturer's specification.

Torque matters on high mileage engines. Aluminum cylinder head threads can strip if the plugs are over tightened, so we torque to factory spec using a calibrated torque wrench. If the old plugs were seized in place from heat cycles over many years, we apply the proper technique to remove them without damaging the head. After installation, we clear the misfire codes and take the car for a road test to verify the idle is smooth, the acceleration is normal, and the check engine light stays off. We back this work with a 24-month or 24,000-mile workmanship warranty.

If your check engine light is flashing, stop driving and get the car to us as soon as possible. A flashing light under load means a cylinder is misfiring badly enough to risk catalyst damage. If you have hit 100,000 miles and have never replaced the spark plugs, now is a good time to have them inspected even if the car seems to run fine. Bring your high mileage car to 4036 I-30 Frontage Road in Mesquite or call (888) 348-4808. We give you a written estimate before any work begins, and nobody here will ever suggest a service you do not need.
