Pre-Purchase Used Car Inspection in Mesquite TX: What Mechanics Check

Buying a used car in Dallas County without a professional inspection first is a gamble you do not need to take. A mechanic you can trust tells you what is actually wrong with the vehicle before you sign anything.

North Texas heat, stop-and-go traffic on I-30, and roads that punish suspension year round mean used cars down here take abuse that does not always show on the surface. A clean Carfax does not tell you if the air conditioning blows warm on a July afternoon in Garland. It does not tell you if the transmission slips under load. It does not tell you if the previous owner skipped timing belt service at 90,000 miles. We see those problems every week.

A full pre-purchase inspection at our shop covers the major systems that cost you money if they fail. On the brakes we measure pad thickness on all four corners, rotor condition, the brake lines, and fluid. On the engine and transmission we check oil and coolant level and condition, look for leaks around the valve cover and oil pan, smell the transmission fluid, inspect belts and hoses, and hook up our diagnostic scanner to pull any stored codes even if the check engine light is not on. For suspension and steering we check ball joints and tie rod ends for play, shocks and struts for leaks, control arm bushings, and CV axle boots for tears.

We look at the frame and structure too. We put the underside under a flashlight and a practiced eye, looking for rust, repairs, or accident damage, and we check door and hood gaps for signs of repainting. Panel gaps that are off from the factory indicate previous collision repair, which matters because repaired frames can develop alignment problems down the road. We check the electrical and climate systems, including battery condition and age, all the lights, power windows and locks, and air conditioning output.

Numbers on a lift only tell part of the story, so we road test every vehicle to feel how the transmission shifts, how the steering tracks, and whether anything vibrates or pulls at speed. Plan for 60 to 90 minutes for a complete inspection. Inspection fees for a full pre-purchase check typically run between $125 and $175 depending on the vehicle, and we quote you the price before we start. You get a written report you can share with the seller, and if they are willing to make repairs, we quote that work so you know exactly what you are looking at.

We do pre-purchase inspections for drivers across Dallas County, including Mesquite, Dallas, Richardson, Rockwall, Rowlett, Sachse, Murphy, Royse City, Garland, Forney, and Sunnyvale. You do not have to be our existing customer. If the inspection turns up something you cannot live with, you walk away knowing you just saved yourself thousands.
