A 3.0L Duramax, a 3.6L EcoDiesel, or any comparable modern half-ton diesel engine is not a heavy-duty diesel. These engines run cleaner and produce less heat than the three-quarter-ton or one-ton trucks you see on work sites. That does not mean they are simple.

Half-ton diesels require low-SAPS oils that protect emissions systems without clogging the DPF filter. These engines also run extended drain intervals. You might go 10,000 to 15,000 miles between changes depending on your driving habits and what the manufacturer specifies. North Texas heat and stop-and-go traffic can shorten that interval, so we always recommend checking your owner's manual for the baseline, then adjusting based on how you actually drive.

We start by running the engine to operating temperature, because warm oil drains faster and carries more contaminants out with it. Then we remove the drain plug and let the old oil drain completely. Diesel engines typically hold more oil than a gas counterpart, often 8 to 10 quarts depending on the model. Next comes the oil filter. We install the correct filter for your specific engine, because the filter on a diesel is not the same as what goes in the gas version of the same truck, and using the wrong filter can cause bypass issues and low oil pressure.

After the new filter is seated and the drain plug is torqued to spec, we fill the engine with the oil weight and specification your engine calls for. Most half-ton diesels need oil that meets CJ-4 or CK-4 specifications, which are designed to protect the emissions equipment, specifically the DPF and the SCR system. Running the wrong oil grade will not immediately break your engine, but it will shorten the life of your DPF and could trigger fault codes. Once the fill is complete, we start the engine, check for leaks around the drain plug and filter housing, verify oil pressure, reset the oil life monitor if your truck has one, and stamp your service record with the mileage.

Some driving patterns call for shorter intervals than the manufacturer recommends. Short trips under 10 miles prevent the engine from reaching full operating temperature, so moisture from combustion stays in the oil instead of burning off. Fuel dilution is another concern, because a lot of short trips thins the oil and reduces its ability to protect bearing surfaces. Towing or hauling regularly pushes the interval shorter too, since heat and fuel dilution both increase under load. Dusty conditions matter as well, because construction zones around Mesquite and the broader DFW area kick up particulate that can work past the filter and contaminate the oil faster.

We perform diesel oil changes for half-ton trucks at our shop on I-30 Frontage Road in Mesquite. Our technicians are ASE-certified and know the difference between a CJ-4 and a CK-4 spec oil, which filter your truck takes, and which one to avoid. When you bring your truck in, we verify the correct oil and filter for your specific vehicle by application, not just the year and make. The visit typically takes 30 to 45 minutes if there are no unexpected findings, and we give you a written estimate before we start. The number you see on that estimate is the number you pay. Call us at (888) 348-4808 or stop by 4036 I-30 Frontage Road to set up a time.
